About us

An English Language Academy for Cambridge & Pearson Edexcel students across the Gulf

Whether you’re a parent trying to work out if your daughter should be entered for IGCSE English First Language (0500) or Second Language (0510), or a student who just wants a tutor who’s actually read the mark scheme — this is who you’d be working with, and why we built Merit around one subject instead of twenty.

English Language & Literature only Cambridge & Pearson Edexcel specialists Saudi Arabia & the Gulf

Who we are

One English language subject, taught properly

Merit Online Academy is an independent, specialist English Language & Literature academy — not a general tutoring marketplace with an English category buried in a dropdown next to Maths and Physics. Every tutor, every lesson plan, and every past paper we use exists for one reason: to teach English, specifically for the Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel syllabuses that international schools across Saudi Arabia and the wider Gulf actually use.

That’s a narrower promise than most academies make, and we think that’s exactly why it works. A tutor who teaches six subjects across three exam boards is spread thin by definition. A tutor who teaches only English, only to these syllabuses, has read every version of the mark scheme, marked hundreds of practice essays against it, and knows precisely what separates a 6 from an 8, or a B from an A*.

What we’re here to do

Close the gap between you English language ability and grade with our Expert Tutoring

The goal behind our English language tutoring is simple: close the gap between what a student can actually do and what their grade says they can do. That gap is almost always about exam technique, not ability — a genuinely strong reader who’s never been shown how an examiner allocates marks will lose points to a more exam-savvy student every time, regardless of who the better writer really is.
We exist to remove that gap. Every lesson is built backward from the actual assessment objectives Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel publish — not a generic sense of “good English” — so a student’s real ability finally shows up on the page the way examiners are trained to reward it.

Who we serve

Built for international-school families in the Gulf

We work with school-age students, roughly Year 10 through Year 13 (or their O Level and A Level equivalents), who are following a British international curriculum — the kind taught at international and private schools across Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Al Khobar in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah in the UAE, Doha and Al Khor in Qatar, and increasingly in Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.
If that’s your family — an English-medium international school, a Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel exam code on the horizon, and a genuine question about how to close a grade gap — you’re exactly who Merit was built for. Every lesson runs online, live, 1:1, scheduled in your Gulf time zone.

What we teach

English language, examined nine different ways at our academy

Every syllabus below is one our lead tutor has personally taught, marked practice work against, and guided real students through to real results. Here’s exactly what each one involves.

Cambridge Assessment International Education

cambridgeinternational.org ↗
1123 O Level English Language

The starting point for many O Level students: two papers testing directed writing, composition, and reading for explicit and implied meaning.

Official syllabus ↗
0500 IGCSE English — First Language

For students who think and write in English day to day — the benchmark qualification most British international schools build their English department around.

Official syllabus ↗
0510 IGCSE English — Second Language

For students building English alongside another main language, with reading, writing, and an optional speaking endorsement — the one families ask us about most directly.

Official syllabus ↗
9093 A Level English Language

A step up in abstraction: language change, spoken versus written English, and how English actually functions in the world, not just on the page.

Official syllabus ↗
9695 A Level English Literature

Where close reading turns into argument — unseen poetry, comparative essays, and the kind of literary analysis universities expect students to already be doing.

Official syllabus ↗
GCSE English Language

Non-fiction and fiction analysis, directed writing, and spoken language endorsement, for students on the UK-based GCSE route.

IGCSE English Language (A & B)

The international equivalent, built around unseen non-fiction extracts and both transactional and imaginative writing.

IGCSE English Literature

Set texts across prose, poetry and drama, plus unseen poetry comparison — taught the way examiners actually mark it, not just discussed.

GCE A English Literature

Two years of increasingly independent literary analysis, culminating in coursework and closed-book exams on set texts.

IAL International A Level Literature

The linear international version of the same qualification, examined in full at the end of the course rather than staged across two years.

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel are trademarks of their respective owners. Merit Online Academy is an independent tutoring provider and is not an accredited examination centre.

How we teach

What actually happens in a lesson

A typical lesson doesn’t start with “let’s discuss the poem.” It starts with the actual assessment objectives for that syllabus, on-screen, so the student knows exactly what’s being rewarded before they write a word. From there: guided analysis or writing practice, feedback measured against real mark-scheme language, and — every few weeks — a full past paper, timed, marked exactly as an examiner would mark it.

It’s less exciting than it sounds, and that’s deliberate. Grades improve from repetition against the right target, not from a single inspiring lesson. Sessions run over Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams — whichever your school already uses — with shared digital whiteboards and annotation tools so feedback happens live, on the actual page, not in a follow-up email.

The expertise behind Merit

English syllabuses taught by someone who has actually done this before

AR
Ammara Riaz
Lead English Language & Literature Tutor

Ammara holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature & Linguistics from the University of Sargodha, and has spent more than four years teaching English Language and Literature online — full-time, not as a side project — to students following Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel syllabuses across the Gulf, the UK, and Canada.

In that time, she’s guided more than 100 GCSE, IGCSE, O Level and A Level students to A*/A grades, mentored A-Level English Literature (9695) students through critical essay writing and unseen text analysis, and built the continuous-assessment habit — regular past-paper mocks, detailed written feedback — that this entire academy is modelled on.

Every tutor who joins Merit is trained to the same standard: real exam-board specificity, real past-paper practice, and real written feedback — not a general “good with English” qualification. If you speak with a Merit tutor, this is the calibre of expertise you’re speaking with.

How our students shine brighter

Two kinds of wins, both real

Some of our students walk away with five A*s. Others walk away having moved up a single grade after a year of feeling stuck — and that second kind of win gets exactly as much attention in this academy as the first. You can see both kinds, honestly labelled, on our results and reviews pages — real grades, real quotes, and no inflated numbers standing in for either.
